- Can I use turfRad on a drone?
Short answer: No, turfRad is not compatible with drones.
Why turfRad Isn’t Designed for Drone Use
turfRad sensors are engineered specifically for vehicle-mounted operation, such as mowers or utility vehicles. There are a few reasons why drone use isn’t supported:
- Hardware & weight: The sensor and its waterproof housing are not designed for drone mounting and are too heavy for practical drone operation.
- Resolution requirements: To achieve usable moisture resolution, a drone would need to fly very low. This is impractical and unsafe on an active golf course.
- Operational complexity: A drone capable of carrying turfRad would be large, difficult to deploy, and disruptive to daily operations.
- Software limitations: turfRad’s data processing and workflows are built around ground-based scanning, not aerial flight paths.
What turfRad Is Designed For
turfRad delivers high-resolution root-zone moisture data when mounted on:
- Fairway mowers
- Utility vehicles
These platforms allow safe, repeatable, and efficient data collection while maintaining the resolution needed for accurate moisture mapping.
For these reasons, turfRad is currently designed for vehicle-mounted use only.
