- turfRad Mobile App vs. turfRad Portal: What’s the Difference?

turfRad uses two separate tools with two very different purposes:

  • The turfRad Mobile App → for sensor setup and configuration
  • The turfRad Portal → for viewing, interpreting, and managing moisture data

In the graphic below, the left image shows the turfRad Mobile App, and the right image shows the turfRad Portal.

Understanding this distinction helps avoid confusion during installation and daily use.

Design ohne Titel (100)

1. turfRad Mobile App

The mobile app is only for sensor configuration. It does not show moisture maps or turf insights.

You use it to:

1. Connect sensors via Bluetooth
Detect nearby sensors and select and pair one or multiple devices.

2. Set sensor location parameters
This ensures uploads happen only where they should, and includes:
  • Facility Location – the location of your golf course
  • Current Location – your phone’s GPS location
  • Sensor Location – where the sensor uploads data
  • Upload Radius – area where uploads are allowed
  • Buffer Zone – small margin around the upload radius
  • Boundary Radius – the outer limit (default ~20 km) within which the sensor remains validly configured. If a sensor is taken outside the boundary radius, it must be reconfigured with a new facility location.

3. Set Wi-Fi

Select the correct network, enter your Wifi password, and confirm the connection.

Once a sensor is configured, all daily scanning and upload behavior happen automatically — no ongoing app interaction needed.

For a full setup guide, including a demo video, see: How to Set Up Your Sensor with the turfRad Mobile App.

2. turfRad Portal

The turfRad Portal is where all soil moisture insights and visualizations appear after a scan. This is the main platform used during daily turf management.

Key areas of the Portal

  • Dashboard: A high-level overview showing moisture category distribution, global fairway conditions, holes trending dry/wet, and moisture and weather trends.
  • Overview: Your moisture maps for interpreting subsurface moisture across all scanned surfaces.
  • Cards: A hole-by-hole card layout showing moisture changes over time — ideal for spotting trends or recurring issues.
  • Sensors: Hardware tracking and troubleshooting, including list of all installed sensors, and activity logs.
